There is value in being able to distill correspondence, research publications, literary works, scripts, copy and other groupings of texts down to their key concepts or vocabulary. There are also many ways to approach and assess the important themes or ideas in a text. Evaluating word frequency is one method that has gained popularity through information graphics such as word clouds, weighted word list, data clouds or tag clouds. However, such representations offer only relative comparisons, conveyed through word size, and only comparison among words for one text, not specific numbers of word counts, nor information covering multiple texts, overall word frequency, or how they change over time. To address this broader, more complex representation of frequency, we developed WordCAKE (Collated Aggregate of Key Elements) to track frequently occurring words in sequential texts (across time, chapters, versions, or any sequential ordering). WordCAKE is a layered representation of key words in multiple texts where each layer or disc represents one text. Key or central words in one text are positioned in the center of a disc. Color highlights words with high overall frequency in the corpus of texts. Any word can be easily located through the alphabetical arrangements of words around the disc. Users can also focus on high rate of change frequencies through color features in order to highlight important changes or trends.

I am currently a Systems Programmer at the University of Wisconsin - Madison Living Environments Laboratory. We work on advancing the science of virtual reality, info and scientific visualization and applying virtual reality to home health care. Before this I spent 6 years in the video game development industry working for two studios on AAA titles. Prior to this I attended the University of Minnesota and first got my hands dirty with Ruby and SketchUp while working in the Digital Design Consortium lab I have been programming SketchUp with both Ruby and the C++ SDK off and on over the past 9 years, look for my first official extension, WordCAKE, over the next month...
