Eneroth Townhouse System
Draw townhouses precisely after their plots no matter its shape. Can be used from anything to city planning to game making.
Eneroth Townhouse System

This plugin lets you easily draw townhouses to any plot shape and is especially useful for irregular medieval town centers where conventional copy-pasting of components won't work. It can be used for everything from city planning to game and film making.

For now the plugin is completely free. I plan to create a licensed version with some extra features especially useful or working with really large models but keep the main content free.

There are two toolbars in the plugin, one for using it to draw buildings and one for creating and editing templates used to draw buildings. There's also a menu by the name of the plugin under Extensions containing the content of the toolbars and additional entries for opening the template directory and showing the documentation for template editing.

Both tools in the plugin have custom instructors showing how they are used and instructions and shown in the status bar.

Requirements

Sketchup 2015 or later.

On Windows IE 9 or later is needed to make the web dialogs work properly  (no matter what is set as your default browser).

Version History

0.1.0

First Beta Release

0.1.1

Second Beta release

Groups and components in templates can now use there naked edges to cut an opening in the building. This is especially useful for windows spanning several faces of the facade or bay windows that crosses the roof eave connects to both the wall and roof.

Buildings can now be drawn with their back side instead of front side along the specified path. This is useful for buildings with one side along the plot border and one side towards the yard. Right click in Add Building tool or Building Position tool to open menu where this can be changed.

The term "House" has been replaced with the term "Building" throughout the extension. With this comes some changes to the file and directory names. To keep old custom template move them from the old "house_templates" to new "building_templates" directory inside the plugin's directory. Also change the file extension from ".hsz" (house, zipped) to ".bldg" (building). The file format itself is the same and nothing within the file has to change.

Template preview thumbnails are improved to now always include the whole building.

Fixed toolbars not showing up after install.

Fixed end angle handels sometimes not showing.

Fixed problems with Gem installer sometimes not reacting despite Gem being successfully installed.

1.0.0

This release finally has some long planned features that are so important it can be called the first official release.

From building properties individual parts, e.g. windows can now be replaced, e.g. with doors. Now proper facades and not just uniform arrays of of facade elements can be made.

Support for special gable and corner parts has been added. For instance corner turrets can now be drawn.

There are 6 new templates and many of the old ones have ben updated to use the new replacement feature.

The rubyzip library has now been packed with the extension instead of being installed separately.

1.0.1

Fixed bug with plugin not loading on systems not using comma as decimal separator.

1.0.2

Fixed solid operations sometimes not functioning.

Added and updated diagrams describing paremeters for part positioning when editing templates.

Added reload button in template browser to make it easier to install new templates.

Fixed inconsistent text size in dialogs on highDPI displays.

Known issues and planned improvements

Better preview images

When saving a template the preview images have rather thick ugly lines. I may include an image library to automatically fix this in the furure. However, for now you can choose to create the images at a larger size and manually downsample them from Extensions > Eneroth Townhouse System > Template Editing > manually Downsample Previews. When this option is enabled you'll be asked to downsample the images yourself when saving a template.

API

I have some ideas about making a public documented API to let developers use this plugin to automatically generate cities.

Even more buildings!

The plugin starts to contain a quite fair number of templates but even more are planned. If you know any websites or books with scale drawings (most importantly elevations) of buildings of this typology, feel free to make suggestions!

It sounds like a marvelous idea, but I can't use it. I started the Ruby console before opening the plugin, and this appeared:

I did it, the problem persists. I reinstalled the plugin on Sketchup 2016 and I had the same problem, I went to the folder that you said, but there's nothing there. I still can't use the plugin D: . This is what appeared on the Ruby console in Sketchup 2016:

I'm sorry but extension warehouse removes the error description from the error message. Can you post again only what is shown in the console after "Error: # {{less than sign}}" and the following bigger than sign. For some reason the extension warehouse doesn't allow these characters.

There's news: I installed the extension on Sketchup 2017 and runs perfectly :) it's an amazing extension n.n.

AMAZING !!

Thank you Eneroth for this wonderful plugin.

It is unvaluable (but you could charge for it :)) to quickly sketch built environnement for a landscape or massing project.

Thank your for this and for all your other neat an clever plugins.

Hi, I'm the guy that you saw on the 3D Warehouse. I have no complaints about the Eneroth Railroad System anymore, but do you know of any websites that contain the .bldg files for other houses and row houses? And if not, how can you create the .bldg files to go in the folder as townhouses?

carlos T.'s picture

i cant use it, i dont see the bldgs, the plugin goes to another window and i dont know what to do. i hope u answer me, please sorry my english i dont speak it

Eneroth3's picture

I don't understand what the exact problem is. Can you share images or a video of what is happening?

carlos T.'s picture

ok thanks for the answer. When i open the plugin to select template the window is empty. later i click the button with a folder and it goes to an windows with the name building_template but now i dont know what i do

i took this pictures

thanks again for the answer

Eneroth3's picture

I've never seen this before. If you stat the Ruby Console before clicking on any tool in my plugin, does it show any errors then?

I'm having the same problem - no templates seem to be loading.

I click 'Add Building' and the window appears empty so I cannot select any template. When I click 'Open Template Folder' the templates are all there in the finder window. No luck if I click 'Reload Template Folder' either.

Using Sketchup 2016 Pro

Thanks!

Are any errors shown in the ruby console if you open it previous to activating the tool?

Thanks for the feedback! A new version with a bug fix is awaiting review and will hopefully be live soon.

A length was accidentally saved as a String and not a Float in the building template resulting in only computers with the same decimal separator can load the templates (in this case ","). If you want to try the extension before the updated version is published you can for now change your system settings to use comma as decimal separator.

Eneroth3's picture

The bug fix si now published. Thanks again for reporting!

I just installed this and now sketchup will not open without crashing - how do I get it off my computer?

Eneroth3's picture

To uninstall this, just as any other plugin, open the plugin directory and remove the .rb file and directory used by the plugin. In this case they are called ene_buildings.rb and ene_buildings.

Rombout V.'s picture

Can i make custom templates. I see the templates are some kind zipped format. they have javascript, model and 2 previews inside.

Eneroth3's picture

Templates are edited from within Sketchup. The template editing documentation is opened from Extensions > Eneroth Townhouse System > Template Editing > Documentation.

Rombout V.'s picture

Yes i found it, was actually trying in a really stupid way. I wanted to make a road with curbs on the the sides. I kept getting some error about facade sides, That they needed to be -x and +x. Eventually with some work around got it to work, cant remember how it did it though.

Hello. You are great. I don't have time to read all the comments here, so maybe I am asking something that others did too: Can you make a new version with more templates, like skyscrapers and blocks? How do I make my own template? I tried but couldn't...

Hello! After install the plugin ,I tried to use it but when I pick points and enter, the status line always show"loading template for first use...(this may take a few seconds)" ,I waited for serveral mins but nothing happen.

any hint???

Hi. Does anything show up in the ruby console?

In my office pc(win7-64bit),I upgrade from 2014 to 2016.Now everything is ok.

So maybe the version 2014 pro matter?

(I haven't check the home pc 's ruby console,^-^).

thanks for your reply.

that explains it. The plugin is only supported by Sketchup 2015 and later.

Burt A's picture

Very interesting plugin. I had the same aforementioned install issue but closing and reopening SketchUp seems to have resolved it as the plugin works despite the hanging install.

I too will buy this plugin when you release. I am very interested in easily building some fantasy towns/maps to visualize an online serial novel I am writing. I will try it after work today. Love to see if I can 'follow' a street and create custom building templates. Excited.

Thanks.

Thanks for ur reply
i have installed the plugin but im having some query

Do u have any video how to use the plugin. I have seen a video on youtube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0d3ovdByyQ)
it say to select template and when i open my template panel its empty and in video it have 4 house can u tell me how to add the house or building

1. how to add house from ware house or
2. how to add a new house or building i have made shall i have to make it group or component and add but how

atek s's picture

will it work with arc shape. in this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0d3ovdByyQ) i have seen its working with rectangular shape. i want to know will it work in circle or arc shape

Eneroth3's picture

There's no specific built in support for arcs but you can manually add control points along a segmented arc. Each segment will count as its own facade and windows will be spread across each segment individually. You can then manually explode the groups for each segment inside the house group and soften the edges between them to make it appear as one continuous surface.

Russell C.'s picture

Brilliant. If you added more townhouses to this it would be a dream come true. It works a treat. i regularly make large town maps for Dungeons and Dragons (I know, I know) and with a few more houses this would cut days off tedious map making out.

Thank you, and I'll pay for the full version for sure.

Is there an 'easy' way to add our own buildings?

Harry M's picture

I was unable to successfully install this extension, and now I can't uninstall it. Now, whenever I open SketchUp, a window appears asking me to finish installing it. Please help.

Jay B's picture

Very nice plug-in for architecture or city planning/design. I had been making a mock city by hand using SU, and I think this will help a ton. Like others, I had to delete Modelur and disable plug-ins for your program to work, and it's 'working'.

Thank you for this, and will look forward to any updates.

UPDATE: I went back to SU2015 and it brought up the error messages back, and I check with the plug-ins and SketchUcation is another conflict. I disable it and everything's fine. I thought I share that with you.

Hi

For some reason the Gem installer didn't work and failed to return an error. To remove the plugin remove both the folder ene_buildings and the file ene_buildings.rb in /users/akirabookpro/library/application support/sketchup 2015/sketchup/plugins/. You might also need to remove the Gem and I think it's located at /Users/akirabookPro/Library/Application Support/SketchUp 2015/SketchUp/Gems/gems/rubyzip-1.1.7.

I don't really know what caused the error. What other plugins do you use? One of those might have changed the behavior of a class used to install.
