Builder Pro
2D and 1D automatic nesting, cost calculation and cutlist generation
Builder Pro

Builder is an automatic 2D and 1D nesting extension for Sketchup. Use Builder to help you build your next project quickly and efficiently, and get instant cost estimates as you draw. Builder will also produce graphical cutlists for sheet materials and strip materials to make construction quick and efficient.

You can use Builder Pro with unlimited input parts. To try Builder before purchasing the Pro version, please download Builder Free, which is limited to 50 parts.

Using Builder

To use Builder, simply enter all the materials used in your project in the 'Edit Materials' window and Builder will automatically assign them to components in your model based on their dimensions. Builder will also find any dimensioning errors in the model or components without a matching material. Types of part supported are sheet materials, strip materials and unit parts that can be set via the component name (e.g. bolts, one-off items etc.). For more information click on the help icon within the Builder toolbar.

Output Options

Once you have setup your model and you materials list, you can run Builder. Select the parts of your model you want Builder to process and click the 'B' button in the toolbar. It has 3 output options:

  1. Quick View: this produces a quick costs overview within SketchUp, so you can see how much your project costs so far.
  2. HTML: this section is designed for printing and for when you have a more finalised version of your project. An HTML document is produced with an overview of costs and optimised graphical custlists for both strip materials and sheet materials to make cutting your parts easy.
  3. XLSX: this outputs a spreadsheet with formulas built in to be used for ordering and budget tracking once your design is complete.

Hi,

I'm afraid all of this is handled by Sketchup themselves and I have no part in it - I would suggest you contact them directly: https://help.sketchup.com/en/contact .

Thanks,

Jack

Good afternoon, I managed to solve a part of the problem you already know, they sent me a receipt of the transaction, but I can not install the extension, the button keeps telling me to buy, there is no download without paying again, you can give me a download link, or how can I download it, or who should I write on this occasion.

for now I have the trial version, I have windows and my version is 2017

Thanks a lot for your help

Hi,

Again I'm afraid this is nothing to do with me and all handled by the extension warehouse - I suggest you contact them again.

Thanks,

Jack

good morning, I write from Colombia, yesterday I bought the extension, but I got an error, use two cards, and even use a address of a family member in U.S.A, but still the error, I never got a notification of the purchase, and the bank tell me that two transactions were successful, therefore I want as I do to have what I pay, besides that they only charge me once, in the bank they have nothing to do as what happened.

Hi Juan,

I'm afraid the extension purchasing system is nothing to do with me - SketchUp Extension Warehouse handles everything to do with that for us, we just supply the plugin code! I suggest you contact their support team directly to resolve this.

Thanks,

Jack

good afternoon
thank you very much for the clarification, I put in contact with sketchup extension warehouse to solve the problem, thank you.

Hi Jack. Have been trying to modify the builder settings on my mac to change othe board domensions, change prices and show prices in $, but don't seem to find the way to save those settings. Tried to look for the file that stores the materials, but couldn't find it either on my HD. Could you help me on how to add other board dimensions, prices, ...?

Thank you very much in advance

Hi Rafael,

Thanks for the feedback, glad you like it! As you have found out, the extension unfortunately isn't really compatible with Mac at the moment due to the way the settings and materials are saved. This makes it not possible to change the materials directly from within SketchUp as you can on Windows, however you can directly edit the file itself to get around this. The file is called builder_settings.txt and will be somewhere in your plugins folder, wherever that is on Mac. How to add new materials should be fairly obvious from looking at the file, with the strip materials on the first line, then sheet materials and then unit items, however please be aware the 3 dimensions for the materials are in inches as these are the default internal units of SketchUp. I am hoping to fix this problem and make the plugin Mac compatible soon, however cannot put an exact date on it I'm afraid!

Thanks,

Jack

Hi Jack
I tried Builder free version. I have a Dynamic component of a draw having few child components. When I create multiple draws with different dimensions and run builder the list of components are not as per the sketchup file. Am I doing something wrong. Pls advise.

regards
dilip

Hi Dilip,

Would you be able to send the file you are having problems with to sales@builder4sketchup.com? It is very difficult to work out what is going on without seeing the model.

Thanks,

Jack

I know I can't add new materials because I am working on a Mac, but all I really need is an optimizer that works with 3600mm x 1800mm panels.

Perhaps this panel size could be added to the plug-in?

This would be really helpful, as this is an industry standard size panel for commercial joinery.

Hi Ben,

You can try editing the file that stores the materials directly if you like - it is in the settings folder inside the Builder plugin folder in your main SketchUp plugins folder. All the measurements are stored in inches however so you would have to convert them. If that doesn't work, send an email to jack@builder4sketchup.com and I will send you a settings file with that size panel in.

Thanks,

Jack

Hi Jack,

Success! Took a bit of perseverance as the path to the sketchup plugin folder is hidden on a Mac for some reason. I substituted the 18mm ply dimensions as you said and it works fine.

Many thanks,

Ben

Hello that tool can make nested with drill for door?

Jack S.'s picture

Hi,

I'm not quite sure exactly what you're asking, however if you mean whether the software can nest things inside cutouts of other components then it can't as of yet. Components are nested with reference to their maximum dimensions (i.e. as a rectangle) so cut outs are ignored.

Thanks,

Jack

Can BUILDER send a nested file direct to a CNC machine for manufacture? Is there any CNC capabilities? Can the nested sheets be converted or saved as a DXF? Thanks

Jack S.'s picture

HI Aaron,

It does not currently I'm afraid - although I believe you can export from SketchUp to DXF already?

Thanks,

Jack

Jack

Hi,

I am planning to at some point - there are quite a few issues with the display and writing the materials files that would need to be fixed, and I do not have a Mac to debug on which makes it quite difficult!

Thanks,

Jack
