FitParts

FitParts is the Sketchup extension for producing cuting layouts. FitParts extension will generate guillotine-style cut maps based on the panel dimensions you have on your stock; it will automatically extract dimensions from currently selected components and groups in Sketchup model. FitParts is usable in woodworking, metal working, glass industry, plastic modeling, and both ih hobby as well as basic proffessional usage which will be supported better in future versions.

User presets the length and width of sheet goods he has. FitParts extension will use the same sheet goods and it decide how many of those it needs for obtaining the necessary parts. Then it will present visually in Sketchup every panel with cut lines, dimensions and serial numbers of parts. The full report can be obtained with legend explaining every part serial number.

Procedure: 1-2-3

  1.  Draw your model in Sketchup. You will generate groups and/or component instances for every part you intend to enter the cut list. Note: please follow normal Sketchup practice when drawing your model and do not leave un-grouped elements (faces, lines, etc) in the model; otherwise the FitParts drawing could merge with your existing cluttered ungrouped elements. Or at least don't put them in x0y positive quadrant where your plans will be drawn.
  2. Select the groups and components you want for cut list. FitParts Pro has the important validation option to give you an idea what you have selected wrong and what you must correct if necessary.
  3. Extensions / FitParts / MakeCutlist will present you the dialog where proper panel size is entered. Click the Cut button to generate the plans for cutting.

The new layer will be presented to you containing the first of panel(s). Actually FitParts will generate one new layer per every panel you need to cut to obtain the selected elements. New layers are named FitParts# where # stands for a number. You are supposed to make visible one of FitParts# layers at a time in order to inspect or print the results uncluttered with datails from other layers.

Sketchup menu option Extensions / FitParts / ReportAfterCutlist will give you the tabular data legend with parts identification and their dimensions. No more tedious dimensions writing by hand!

In case you mess the view because of rotation or other operations and you want to get back the proper view of your generated FitParts# layers, just click Extensions / FitParts / GiveMeGoodView and you will get the proper and clear view of cut map.

Basic FitParts parameters

FitParts will use panel(s) of identical size. User can choose the size to be one of two predefined panels/sheets, or he can type at will his own panel's dimensions. Various panel dimension units are supported. The kerf (blade cut width) is also chosen at will.

Choice of FitParts parameters dimension units does not affect the units of the final result, i.e. cut list plans. The cut lists shall always show dimensions in the system units which user selected in standard Sketchup menu before starting the MakeCutList operation.

Edge banding [Pro feature]

Among other parameters, when clicking the MakeCutList menu option user will obtain dialog where he can also define the edge banding. The banding can be done separately for every selected part. Alternatively user can choose to band all of the parts the same way.

Up to 4 banding tapes are supported! Every tape can be individually defined for any edge of every selected part in your model.

Rotation and Grain alignment of parts

If table surface has grain or structure of some sort, designer needs a means to orient every part differently according to his needs. For that FitParts supports 90° rotation of any part individually.

Validation

The problem: almost every design contains a dangling line or just a "scratch" that you cannot find in a complicated design. Left construction points, faces without edges, all sorts of elements are getting selected when you surround your design with mouse and choose Cutting option. The cutting programs then take all these mistakes, give some solution and later you see it is mostly wrong.

The solution: Fitparts validation. Instead of searching for multiple Sketchup extensions that will help you clean the design, Fitparts offers quite simple and elegant solution: validation screen. It should be started as the first step after your design and prior to any cutting operation. Fitparts validation is integral part of Fitparts Basic version. You get all your selected parts clearly described, even classified in three colors, with enough information to take necessary steps to correct all possible design mistakes very efficient. How is that possible?

Well, just load the trial version of Fitparts and that will be clear to you in no time!

General implementation of Fitparts

What is best: Fitparts is not necessarily used just for cutting list generation, it can be used just fine for reverse selection of parts, hide/show toggle unselected parts, save and restore selections, and more to come!

Specifics

You can export data in CSV format, which is the import format for CutListPlus, WPS Spreadsheat, MS Excel and other programs.

The thickness of panel or sheet you physically have on stock does not need to match the parts thickness in your Sketchup virtual model. In practice this is very much desired feature because people often make drawing mistakes by choosing a few millimeters thicker or thinner parts when making their model - no problem for FitParts! Still FitParts will calculate and present you the thickness of your parts both in CutList dialog as well as in Report dialog. There you can check if the parts thickness is acccording to your project demands.

FitParts will try to put into cut list almost everything you select in Sketchup model, giving you the utmost freedom. You can select either components, groups or both in your Sketchup model as long as their one-time exploded operation would give representative faces for FitParts.

FitParts will refuse selected Sketchup component/group for cutting only when serious errors are done. There is a validate menu option Extensions / FitParts / ValidateSelection to assist  in making the necessary corrections before making the cutlist itself.

FitParts supports rectangular or non-rectangular shaped components or groups with perpendicular edges.

All results FitParts makes will stay in Sketchup, keeping you inside your current and familiar environment. FitParts will interfere minimally with Sketchup model: it will generate a few layers more (one per panel to be cut), it could select or deselect, change a perspective or view to show you layers, but  no more than that. For starters: you can present panel cut list by making it's layer the only visible layer in Sketchup model (please refer to help for details). You can either keep or delete the FitParts generated layers (named FitParts, FitParts1, FitParts2,...).There is menu option RemoveFitpartsLayers that will automatically remove all genereated Fitparts layers from Sketchup if you want to start with uncluttered Sketchup environment.

Printing cut blueprints is done from within Sketchup with ease and clarity, like every other Sketchup printing.

FitParts is not limited to any specific names of components or groups: it is important just to select what you want and that being a component or a group.

FitParts trial version support up to 10 parts and no banding allowed. Full version is obtainable from author's site.

Both metric and English units are available.

Kerf value setting (cutting width) is also available. Material name is reported and exported.

Operating system: MS Windows, tested on MS Windows 10.

On author's site there are additional details about FitParts as well as software for downloading.

Version 3.07 now has two modes of operation: mode with maximum validation and mode with minimum validation.

Maximum validation is quite similar to what users already have in previous version - gives the utmost importance to everything user select; every selected part is checked to be either group or component instance; in validation screen you get red, blue and green explanatory lines. This is for designers who strive for clean and professional design. That can be important if one intend to do some other processing of his model, either in Sketchup or to export to other programs.

Minimum validation (completely new) will be tolerant to whatever user select, and get into cutlist not only selected groups and component instances but faces as well. All validation massages are green coloured, everything goes smoothly and fast. This mode is when one know to having good design that includes faces for cutlist, or when having a bad design obtained from outside source where faces are not pulled out into 6-faces pieces and user wants to get an estimation of material needed for cutting, or similar.

Now the beautiful Fitparts version 3.06 is ready for everybody. I am sure there could be somewhere similar separate Sketchup extensions for some of the new features already by other authors, but here I bring my version of them all under the Fitparts hood nicely adapted and waiting for you to use them in just one extension: Fitparts! New features in this version:

1) super-fast making of rectangular parts. Instead of push-pull tool manually activated and then inputting the offset value, with FitParts you define the offset value (menu option Fitparts/Extension/Set push distance) just once, and then do right click/PushMinus or PushPlus menu option to make rectangular piece.

2) Option Extensions / Fitparts / UnhideAll: if you ever get lost what you hid this option is for you.

3) Option Extension / Fitparts / Rest Hide/Show: you select some elements and then activate this option to hide from the site everything visible; then work with visible elements, and when you are ready click again the Rest option to return elements hidden with previous call to Rest. Nice, isn't it?

4) You can save your selection that would last for the current session. There are four selections that you can save and restore them during session.

5) You can revert selection: what was selected becomes deselected, and vice verse.

6) And the crown jewel for the end: validation screen (Extension / Fitparts / 1-Validation) is equipped with buttons for every piece selected in model. So now right from validation screen you can deselect every piece (minus button), or select it again (plus button) or it can be exclusively selected with everything else deselected.

What does that mean? When validating your components before cutting operation (menu option CutList), you can see any offending part and immediately deselect it from selection. But what is interesting even more - you can actively help cleaning your design with the help of validation screen. For example, you cannot find some small edge, or construction point; you just press exclusive select button E+ corresponding that element in the validation screen; then right click to model / RestHideShow, and you will immediately get your hidden element, no other special extensions needed apart from your favorite Fitparts!

Enjoy!

This is a nice extension and works well as far as it goes. I am having some problems however.
I cannot get it to recoginize inches as a dimension of the material to cut. if I enter 96 inches by 48 inches it will not generate a cut sheet. It also tells me that a part with 6 faces is not a solid ( they are grouped). It will not recognize a non rectangular piece. For instance a rectangle with one corner cut off. it says the part has 7 faces and is not a solid. Any sugestions?

Thanks for contacting me. The problem with your design was you inserted some text/glyphs in the same groups that were selected for cutting. That is the reason why Validation issued red warnings. With red warnings Fitparts refuses the cutting and warns the user about the reason.
Of course you can use in your design everything that Sketchup allows, but generally one should not include in the very component intended for cutting any strange elements: text, dimensional lines and such because they are not intended for cutting anyway. Text and other should be on their own, or in other unselected groups or elsewhere, but not in the component/group that are selected for cutting.

slavne's picture

I can't see any problem with 96" x 48": cutting works at my place. Did you make a group/component instance from your rectangle with cut-off corner? Is your system Windows? Do you care sanding me your model to see? Make a contact at http://nesic.rs/sajt/en/contact

New version 3.04 contains performance improvement and a bug correction.

Outline window for current fitparts layer now contains three entities at user's disposal: parts numbers, parts dimensions and cutting lines. User can do whatever he wants: hide them, delete them or color them, for example.

Previous users of FitpartsPro are encouraged to switch to this new version.

Its a great pleasure reading your post. Its full of information I am looking for and I love to post a comment that "The content of your post is awesome" Great work.

And yes: the new version Fitparts v3.00 finally supports not one but up to 4 banding tapes. They can all be manually implemented on any existing edge of every selected part in your Sketchup model. Both parameters (panel dimensions, kerf width, banding tapes widths) as well as per-part configuration (edge banding, rotation) all fit side by side in one simple dialog.
Everybody can try the FitParts basic version (banding features visible but disabled), and if happy with the concept you are welcome to obtain the full FitParts Professional version with all features unlocked.
I wish all my users and others happy Fitparts anniversary and a lot of nice projects!

The new Fitparts v2.90 introduces the rotation of parts. That means user can align the parts according to the table structure.
If a part is not rotated, it will have longer dimension aligned to the longer dimension of table. If user chooses to rotate a part, the part will be cut from table with smaller part dimension aligned to the longer table dimension, i.e. part will be rotated 90 degrees.
That way designer can control the part's grain structure.

Having some hiccups with the software, "Validate selection" pops up just fine and works, Many thanks for that. However when I hit Extensions->fitparts->make cutlist I get no popup window. Any ideas what might be going on?

slavne's picture

Hi Rauno,
Do you use Windows operating system? If you don't that is normal (don't support Mac in this moment). If you do use it, send me a reply over my site comments to determine the exact cause of the problem: http://nesic.rs/sajt/en/contact

New version FitParts 2.07 is ready on my cite and will be available here as well soon.

Now your FitParts will show material name in menu options: MakeCutlist, ReportAfterCutlist, and Export. Many users suggested that possibility and so here it is for you!

Also a reported bug in edge banding is corrected.

Какво става ако материала е с фладер, а фладера трябва да е на контра?

slavne's picture

Rotation of parts is not supported. Possibly we shall see about that in future version/s.

The extension it’s amazing!!! Lots of details considered that make our work simpler and less time consuming, Wonderful job Slavne

However I would give you a little tip on how to make the extension more time saving for woodworkers...

It is just adding the column MATERIAL to the cut list table, to better classify same thickness components that are made from different materials

In that way it saves us from lots of typing….
Given that, for example, there is a wide range of sheet material of 18 mm thickness types (MDF, Chipboard, MDF veneered, Plywood, OSB, Solid wood, etc) and eventhough there is a column that states the thickness, it is a MUST to fill component description for every component to differentiate them apart!!!

Since one can create custom materials (I personally have them coded by colors), just by assigning a material to a specific component that will later show in the table… it would add an extra criteria to separate apart same thickness BUT different materials components. It would save us from lots of typing.

slavne's picture

Material quote is added in version 2.07.

slavne's picture

Thank you for the praise and the tip!
The next sub/version of FitParts will have material column in output.

For download of FitParts: until Sketchup team approve the new version, you can get the newest trial version from my site at:
http://nesic.rs/sajt/en/?option=com_quickdownload&view=code&code=4D7F48BB820DF4704812A205A2D2C99F211

And of course all tips are always welcomed from my users. Everybody having some interesting suggestion for improvement of FitParts - don't hesitate to bring forward your practical ideas!

why isn´t it possible to download directly from extensions warehouse? why use a external website??

slavne's picture

The people from Sketchup need some time to approve the new version.
In the meantime, you can get the new version from my site
