OSX Issues

This plugin doesn't work as well under OSX as it does under Windows. I'm looking into the issue.

I've instaled it...and nothing...there is no plugin in skp or i've no idea where is it. :/

ThomThom's picture

What SketchUp version?
Have you restarted SketchUp after installing?
Have you also installed the required TT_Lib?
Do you see any error messages?
Do you find the menus under the Draw menu?

pakk K's picture

I've been trying on skp 20016 (windows 8.1) and skp 2015 (windows 10) Extension is on the "system preferences -->extensions check list...but nothing more.
Yep I've instaled TTLib2 first and then 3dtexteditor.
There is no error messages.

ThomThom's picture

You restarted SketchUp after installing?

And you looked in the Draw menu?

If you did that, and still don't see it, can you please start a thread in the SketchUp forum? https://forums.sketchup.com/c/extensions
Mention my nickname "@thomthom" so I get a notification. There we can more easily debug this issue - sharing files and screenshots etc. The review section here doesn't allow for a very efficient conversation thread.

pakk K's picture

Hey.

It's on the draw menu in both wersions...fck...i've missed it. Sorry. So ok...it's fine...it works. THX ThomThom.

Regards

don't worry, I had the same thing

Wow, one of my favorite plugins. Thank you!

Good morning, the plugin doesn't see the HeliosCondBlack font, the font in the system and visible in Sketchup. Thank you in advance.

P.S.

Sorry, installed a new version and everything worked

ThomThom's picture

Ah, good to hear the new version worked. The old version was very fragile and didn't work right. It would fall back to a "probable" list of font if it failed to enumerate them.

Hi

This is a good tool, but after installing SU2018 using any of the 3d editable text dropdown boxes (i.e. font/justification etc) causes SU to totally crash. Is this just me?

Also, what do you think about adding a button to the editor that allows an option of mading the text component unique (i.e. in instances when the text being edited has been copy and pasted). Just saves extra clicking.

Cheers

ThomThom's picture

Hm.. I've not heard of the crashes in SU2018. Can you start a thread in the SketchUp forums? (https://forums.sketchup.com/c/extensions)
It's easier to follow up with questions - as well as sharing images and files.

Thank you. this is a great plugin!

Is there a way to link the 3D text to a dynamic component so that the text would change / update based on the parameters input in the DC options? I am using number of parametric DCs for design documentation and to link them with your 3D text would be a great help.

The plugin says it is incompatible with Mac OS X. What is non-functional in OS X? Note: I have not tried the plugin, myself, but what functionality is impaired in Mac?

ThomThom's picture

Not able to get list of font on the system under OSX.
This extension might also have stopped working for the very latest Windows/IE versions as well, as MS changed some stuff needed to fetch the font list.

Any Plans for Pro 2017 Compatibility?

ThomThom's picture

Ah! As of 2017 it is in fact compatible with SU2017. But I had forgotten to check the checkbox.

I just did that now. Thanks for the heads up.

Any Plans for Pro 2017 Compatibility?

Does it write in other Languages?

ThomThom's picture

I'm not sure I understand the question? The extension just let you pick the font to use?

Viet N's picture

I like it so much, thank!

This plugin has worked WONDERFULLY in the past. One of the best sketchup plugins you can get. However, with the new 2017 update, a couple things need to happen.

First... the plugin file needs to be in the RBZ format. An easy fix.

Once it's been loaded into the plugins list, the full font library on my computer doesn't seem to be accessible to the TT_Lib2. It's only pulling system fonts, and non of my custom downloaded fonts. Under the properties, it looks like the permissions are different. "List folder contents" are no longer available. I'm not sure that is the problem, but I'd love to get this solved. I use text all the time for models.

Do you have a workaround for this? Thanks!

The extension is packaged as RBZ as it always has been. Not sure why you think otherwise?

As for SU2017 - something changed that made the extension fail to fetch the fonts on the system on Windows machines. I don't know what or why.

What properties and permissions are you referring to?

john p's picture

Hi, When will this be SU2017 compatible? Thank you.

Andy D's picture

The plugin seems to come in ok now. It still isn't loading the full font list. thanks for your reply! I'll look forward to using this extension lots more in the future. It made my life so much easier, and is hands-down my favorite extension of any of them.

We installed this extension however there is no context menu item for editing the text which is why we are trying the extension. Anyone know why this critical piece of the extension is missing

Thomas T.'s picture

You can only edit text created with this extension. If you created it with other means it won't work.

Good day
I installed the plugin on SU2016 and it is working without problems.(Great Plugin thanx)
now i have SU2017 and the plugin do not have the same fonts as in SU2016. Did I miss something?

Thomas T.'s picture

I've heard reports of this. I'm not sure what might be causing it. I presume you are using Windows?

Yes Im running Windows 7 Pro.
The biggest problem now is that SU2017 files can not be opened in earlier versions of SU.

Thomas T.'s picture

From the Save As dialog you can save back to older SU version if needed.

Sorry to say it doesn't seem to work in SU 2016 Pro on OS X El Capitan v10.11.4. Have had to uninstall.

It appeared at first to install ok (except that I had to manually download and install TT_Lib2, then restart SU), then Draw/Editable 3D Text menu, and Context menu/Edit Text both appear.

But when I try to enter any new text, or change the text height, the text disappears from the main Sketchup window. And when I try to make any edit change, the text disappears too. And before that, trying to place the default 'Enter text', gave 'No alignment' unless I had the mouse pointer over a face - and even then, wouldn't align to a corner or cPoint, just to On Face.

FlatText Free, FlatText Lite, and FlatText (paid) are possible alternatives, for those needing editable 3D text on a recent Mac.

Todd D. W.'s picture

In case anyone else is having this issue, I installed the extension and restarted Sketchup 8, but it wouldn't work. No matter what I tried within Sketchup. I finally realized that I had to allow internet access through my firewall so that the extension could install the additional library and then it worked. I then re-disabled Sketchup's internet access and it seems to still be working.

Thank you ThomThom - this extension fills a huge void in text handling for SketchUp.

The one serious limitation I am struggling with, however, is the ability to embed an instance of 3D text in a component. There does not seem any way to make each instance of text unique once it's part of a component - as a result, changes to the text on one component wind up changing it across all instances. Maybe I'm doing something wrong or there's a workaround? The "Make unique" option is disabled when the 3D text is selected within a component.

I posted this question in the Community Forums as well.

Will this work on earl versions of sketchup? Is it only for 8 and up?

ThomThom's picture

hm... It's been a while since I wrote this extension. But I see I tagged it as SU7 compatible.

Hi, I'm new to plugins. I downloaded the text editor and the TT_Lib files and installed them into my version 8 sketchup using Window/ Preferences/ Extensions/ then the install extension button. But, I can't see the plugin on the Plugins dropdown menu, or any other menu. How do I use it? Sorry if you have posted instructions somewhere, but I could not find them.

Hi Russ

This particular extension adds it menus to the Draw menu and the context menu. (Described further up on this page in the description.)
If you don't see the menus there, then check Preferences > Extensions to make sure it's enabled.

Hi Thom Thom,
great, I can find them now. This works perfectly. Thank you.
