This is a simple importer that takes coordinate points produced by total stations and other precision measuring devices and places them into SketchUp. The plugin will mark each point location with a construction point and the user has the option to tag each point with point information, add a component marker for better visibility and draw a path of the shoot.
The importer can process csv and txt files that contain the following 5 pieces of point information in the following sequence:
PointID | Coord (N or E) | Coord (E or N) | Coord Z | Feature info
Many of the modern total stations and other precision positioning tools can produce files in this "style" or configuration.
To activate the importer.... Plugins > "Total Station Point Importer"
You can download a csv sample file to play with here - https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0MiEFvm6FmsdVpNWFg3VE1KSU0
NOTE: This plugin currently reads only CSV files that have been saved under the Windows "end of line" encoding.
Version Notes:
1.0.1 - Importer will now allow for float and integer coordinates in the same line.

Good morning.
Good morning.
I am using Total Station Point Importer to upload country boundaries and air spaces coordinates into my Sketchup model.
So far so good, but all of a sudden, as soon as I have started to input come far off coordinates (I am in Spain, Europe), the shapes drawn are completely weird. For instance, drawing UK or Germany had no issues. But now that I am working with South America the shapes don't match.
I wonder if there are any limits imposed to the Northing / Easting values that the plugin can manage, because that could be one reason for that.
If you tell me how, I can send you some files obtained with Excel, transformed into UTM coordinates and the Sketchup shapes, so you can see for yourself.
Any ideas or suggestions would be really appreciated, as I am stuck at this point.

Rafael Gallardo.

What version of SketchUp are you using? What OS are you on?
You may want to try my Point Gadget plugin instead. This is a more recent creation with much of the functionality of the TSPI extension.
You can find it here - http://extensions.sketchup.com/en/content/point-gadget

Hi,
Hi,
Is there an easy way to get rid of the POINT ID txt label?
I would also like to display the elevation of certain points.
Thanks
-Kevin
All the Point ID txt labels
All the Point ID txt labels are placed in a group on their own layer. You can either turn off the layer to remove the labels from your view or you can delete the labels by deleting the layer.

I am using your sub to input
I am using your sub to input lunar data (Google "The Big Moon Dig"). It has worked very reliably on files up to at least 50,000 points. The color points feature is very helpful.
Do you plan to make a SketchUp 14 compatible version?
Currently I have to keep SketchUp Version 13 on my machines.
Thanks

Fantastic at importing points
Fantastic at importing points from a GIS survey I had done.
What I want to do now is create a TIN/terrain. Anyone know how to do this automatically?
Lawrence
Did you try: Select the data
Did you try: Select the data => Explode (repeat till no groups are available). Select the points; then goto Draw => sandbox => from contours

It would be a lot more useful
It would be a lot more useful if it could use linework codes like we do in Civil 3D. For example + EP ; + EP1 ; the + tells it to start an Edge of Pavement line at this point and to connect all the EP shots, EP1 would be another edge of pavement that doesn't connect to the first line, and so on. Then you can add other codes like - to end, < to start a curve, and so on.
Mike,
Mike,
Thanks for the input. To confirm, you want to stitch the "EP"s together … "EP1"s together … etc….. basically connect all the points that have the same feature name. Correct?
Would you want this geometry geration during the import or would it be an additional feature after the points are imported in.
Is there a location where I can find a listing of linework codes?
You can contact me via how2su+EWH@gmail.com

Line work codes vary from
Line work codes vary from organization to organization. Some places still use numeric coding but many have switched over to EP1, EP2 etc.
I would be very interested in working with this program to make it more survey friendly. If you would like more feedback you can let me know via reply here or kmurphy@dwsmith.com.
Thanks

please answer for us! do you have any ideas about what we might do wrong?
Adam,
Adam,
Can you let me know at what point you see a failure?
.. ie Do you get a dialog in order to select your file?
If you open your ruby console (Window>Ruby Console) and try to run the plugin, do you get errors?
How did you install the plugin? Manually or via the EWH dialog?
What OS are you running on?
Any screenshots or other documentation would be great.

Works great for CMM
Works great for CMM measurements as well. Exported data from Google spreadsheet, imported to SU, and manipulated there. (Or used for visual representations.)
Anyone know of a script that will read SU guide points and output to CSV?
Hey Jay,
Hey Jay,
I am working on a point exporter. It will be out soon :-)
Here is a quick preview of what I am working on. It's a bit cryptic but I think you will get the idea. In this plugin, you work with construction point markers instead of construction points as the markers are easier to move and see. One of the features will be to export a csv.
